It is obvious that the iPad is trying to compete in the ebook market.  There is no surprise with the iBookstore that is being developed by Apple is going to be the next iTunes for books.  Quite a few publishers have signed onto Apple’s service to start selling books on the iPad.  Is this enough to actually replace other ebook reading devices?

There will be some challenges in doing this.  The first is the screen.  While the iPad does have a very high resolution color screen, it’s still a normal LCD screen.  For some reading on this type of device is not a problem.  For others, there is a preference for electronic ink like on the Kindle.  The iPad could have had a combination type screen with both, but it’s stuck with the normal type of screen for now.

One more thing to be concerned about is battery life.  At the present time the iPad is supposed to get around 10 hours of battery life.  This is most likely with services turned off and the screen set to a reasonable level of brightness.  Even at 10 hours, it’s still far behind the battery life of other readers.  Some will argue that you just need to get into the habit of recharging the device each week.  Others would like to have the multi-week battery life other devices like this offer.
